Flood Insurance

How to obtain flood insurance?

If you are looking to buy flood insurance, you can do so by either going to your insurance company for such coverage or you can buy it from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Buying insurance from NFIP requires that your community participate in the NFIP Program.

You can also buy flood insurance from insurers who issue such policies in partnership with the federal government. This makes it easier on part of the policyholder as they just have to go to one place to get their insurance. The insurer handles the task of charging premiums, collecting amounts from the insured, and issuing the policy. Such types of insurers are known as Write Your Own (WYO) insurers.

Suppose you have taken home insurance from an insurance company who is not in the WYO Program, they will refer you to someone who is in the program for getting flood coverage and will even order the flood insurance policy for you directly from the federal government.

Many people make the mistake of not taking flood insurance because they think they don’t need it. In recent years, many people who did not require taking flood insurance actually had severe home damage problems because of the floods cause by hurricanes.

Floods caused by hurricanes are not the only cause for concern in taking a policy. Water can damage your home in the following ways:

  • Floods, waves, and tidal water
  • Water overflow from a body of water, which may or may not be wind driven.
  • Underground water
  • Water from sewers and drains

The above-mentioned causes of damage is excluded in your general home insurance coverage but is covered under flood insurance. Taking flood insurance provides you coverage against such risks and you can make a claim only through the flood insurance converge for such losses. The flood insurance policy comes into effect 30 days from the date on which it is applied, unless you just built your house recently which means it is effective soon after you home is built.

If you bought a home on a 30-year mortgage, you need to be aware of the fact that there can be many changes in the next thirty years. If you live in an area that is thought of as a place with even a small potential for flood damage, then you are better off taking this insurance than without it.
