Health Insurance

About Health Insurance Policy

Health insurance is insurance that gives you medical coverage in situations where you have to spend money to get treatment for a disease, illness, injury and the like. It is a must for anyone to have health insurance these days given the rising cost of medical treatment. Even a couple of days stay at the hospital can put a financial strain on you.

Before you take up health insurance, you need to be aware of the types of health insurance plans available:

Managed Care Plans - Here health insurance plans are provided by managed care providers who have a network of medical care professional with whom you can get in touch with for medical assistance. Such plans come under three categories in the United States:

  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) - You pay a fee every month whether or not you take medical assistance that month. It is also the oldest form of organized health care.

  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO) - The PPO will get into contracts with hospitals or medical service providers, and in doing so will provide you a lesser fee. You have to be a PPO member to get access to their network of medical care professionals. As a PPO member, you pay up for services they provide. In return you get reimbursed for the cost incurred in medical treatment.

  • Point of Service (POS) - In this form of managed care you pay up a minimal payment for taking the services of a physician within the POS network. You do not have to pay any deductible.

Indemnity Plan – This type of a health insurance plan allows you to get medical help whenever required, from any doctor or specialist you need. You will pay a portion of the cost of medical treatment while the remaining will be paid off by the insurance company. This health insurance plan can be expensive. The type of heath insurance plan you chose should be based on reliability of the insurance provider, the features offered by the plan, benefits you receive, the cost you have to incur, and how it can be of particular help in your situation. Based on these factors you should judge the plan and decide if you would like to take it up or not.
