Understanding personal property coverage in home insurance
Your home insurance policy will cover for losses on your personal belongings or contents in your home. This means all personal items inside the home structure that is owned by you or your family members such as T.V.s, Sofa sets, furniture, clothes, appliances, and so on are covered for the same set of risks and losses as the home’s structure itself.
It is important to understand about personal property coverage because in the unexpected event of having to make a claim on losses, you should be aware of what you can claim on and how much. Personal property coverage can range from 50% to 75% of your home's structure coverage. Generally the amount you would receive is 50% of your home’s structure, but if you want 75% then you should have paid for Replacement Costs because such payments give you the amount that is required to replace the belongings you lost.
For example, if your property is worth $300000, your personal property coverage could be between $150000 and $225000. At the time of loss you gain by way of a cash compensation for losses incurred, and the depreciation factor on your personal items is also counted when providing compensation at the time of loss.
Just how much of coverage you will receive is an issue you should discuss with your insurance agent or insurance company. Be sure to check out on this so that you are not caught unawares at the time of loss. Ask them about items for which you would have to pay extra for coverage. The reason why some items are charged more is because in the event of a loss it may cost more to replace them than what is normally provided in your coverage limits.
When looking into the coverage for personal property a good idea would be to buy some extra Guaranteed Replacement Coverage endorsement as doing this can increase your personal property coverage.
